Microchipping
In the United Kingdom, it is mandatory for all dogs aged 8 weeks and older to have a microchip. As of June 10, 2024, this legal requirement also applies to all cats over the age of 20 weeks. The purpose of microchipping is to enable the identification and safe return of your pet in case they become lost or are stolen.
Microchipping involves the use of a permanent identification system, where a tiny chip, no larger than a grain of rice, is implanted beneath the skin on your pet’s scruff. This procedure can be performed while the animal is conscious, and the chip is inserted using a large needle in the neck area. It is essential for you to ensure that your contact information is always kept up to date with the microchip database company.
Each microchip possesses a unique number that can be read by a portable scanner. These scanners are widely available to most veterinarians, including Wooding’s, local authorities, and rescue centres. By accessing the central microchipping database, they can easily retrieve your contact details.
Once your pet has been scanned and identified through their microchip, a simple phone call can swiftly reunite you with your beloved companion.
